Many people feel stuck in their 20s. Between figuring out careers, finances, relationships, and independence, it can feel like everyone else has life figured out except you.

If you’ve ever felt lost, behind, or unsure about what direction your life should go, you’re not alone. Feeling stuck in your 20s is incredibly common, even though it often feels so isolating.

As a life coach for 20-somethings locally in Richmond, VA and nationally, I see this struggle all the time. Many people assume they’re the only one feeling this way, but the truth is that uncertainty is a normal part of this stage of life.

Why Your 20s Can Feel So Confusing

Your 20s are often the first time you’re responsible for building your life without a clear roadmap.

After years of structure from school, parents, and teachers, many young adults suddenly find themselves responsible for decisions about careers, finances, relationships, and where they want to live. While this freedom can be exciting, it can also feel overwhelming because they are BIG life altering decisions.

Most young adults expect to have a clear life plan by this stage, but the reality is that most are still experimenting and figuring things out.

Your 20s are meant to be a decade of exploration and learning.

The Hidden Pressures of Your 20s

Typically a lot of 20-somethings underestimate how many new pressures show up during this stage of life.

Some of the most common pressures people experience in their 20s include:

  • Choosing a career path
  • Managing student loans or finances
  • Navigating relationships and dating
  • Living independently for the first time

These pressures can create the feeling that you should already know exactly what you’re doing with your life.

Signs You Might Be Feeling Stuck

If you’re feeling stuck in your 20s, you might notice some of these patterns in your life:

  • Constantly comparing yourself to other people
  • Feeling overwhelmed by too many options or decisions
  • Procrastinating important life choices
  • Feeling like you should be further ahead than you are
  • Wanting change but struggling to take action

Many people assume something is wrong with them when they feel this way, but these experiences are extremely common during this stage of life.

Why Feeling Stuck Is Actually Normal

One of the biggest misconceptions about your 20s is that you’re supposed to have everything figured out.

The truth is that confidence and direction rarely come from thinking alone. They come from trying things, gaining experience, and adjusting along the way.

Most people discover what they enjoy, what they’re good at, and what they want out of life through trial and error.

Feeling uncertain does not mean you’re failing. It often means you’re in the middle of discovering what works for you.

How to Start Getting Unstuck

If you’re feeling stuck in your 20s, the most helpful step is often shifting from overthinking to taking small actions.

Here are a few ways to start building momentum:

Try Small Experiments

Instead of waiting until you have the perfect plan, try small experiences that help you learn about yourself. This could include exploring new jobs, skills, hobbies, or environments.

Add Structure to Your Week

Creating a basic routine can help reduce the feeling of chaos and make it easier to take consistent action.

Focus on Progress, Not Perfection

Many people stay stuck because they’re waiting for certainty. In reality, progress usually comes from imperfect action.

Talk Through Your Thoughts

Sometimes it helps to talk through your challenges with someone who can help you organize your thinking and explore your options.

How Life Coaching Can Help When You Feel Stuck

Many young adults struggle to create clarity and direction on their own. And ironically, it’s because you don’t have enough life experience to understand what to do. “You don’t know what you don’t know.”

Working with a life coach can help you identify your goals, build structure, and take action toward the life you want to create.

As a life coach based in Richmond, Virginia, I work with young adults who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure about their next steps. Coaching provides a space to think through challenges, develop strategies, and build confidence moving forward.
