What To Do If You Have No Direction After College
Graduating college is supposed to feel like a big, exciting milestone.
Instead, a lot of people feel like:
“Okay… now what the hell am I supposed to do?”
You go from having a structured path (classes, semesters, deadlines) to… nothing.
No roadmap.
No clear next step.
Just a ton of pressure to “figure it out.”
And if you don’t know what you want to do?
It can feel really easy to freeze.
Stay home.
Scroll your phone.
Think about your future… but not actually do anything about it.
Let’s fix that.
Why You Feel So Directionless After College
First, nothing is wrong with you.
This is one of the most common phases people go through in their 20s.
You’ve been on a structured path your entire life. Then suddenly, you’re expected to:
- pick a career
- make money
- build a life
- and somehow enjoy it
That’s a lot.
And when there are too many options (or none that feel right), most people don’t choose wrong…
They choose nothing. Which is where people get stuck.
The Biggest Mistake You Can Make Right Now
Waiting.
Waiting to feel ready.
Waiting to feel confident.
Waiting to “figure it out.”
Meanwhile:
Days turn into weeks.
Weeks turn into months.
And now you feel even more behind.
Here’s the truth:
You are not going to think your way into direction.
You have to move your way into it.
The Most Important Thing You Can Do: Get a Job
I don’t care if it’s related to your degree or not.
Get. A. Job.
Seriously.
An entry-level job is not you “settling.” It’s you starting.
Why getting a job matters (even if it’s not your dream job)
- You build real-world experience
- You learn how workplaces actually operate
- You develop structure and routine
- You start making money
- You meet people and build connections
And one of the most underrated things:
You get exposed to opportunities you didn’t even know existed.
A random job can lead to:
- internal promotions
- new departments
- people who connect you to better opportunities
You don’t get those opportunities sitting at home.
How a “Random” Job Can Actually Help You Find Direction
Let’s say you take an entry-level job.
Here’s what can happen:
- You realize what you don’t want (this is valuable)
- You discover skills you’re actually good at
- You meet someone who introduces you to a new opportunity
- You get promoted into something better
Direction doesn’t come from guessing. It comes from experience.
3 Simple Steps to Get Moving
If you feel completely stuck, start here:
1. Apply to jobs (even if they’re not perfect)
Stop waiting to find “the one.” Pick a direction and start.
2. Commit to working for 3–6 months
Treat it like a learning phase. You’re not stuck there forever. You’re gaining experience.
3. Pay attention to what you like and don’t like
This is how you build clarity. Not by thinking. By doing.
While you work at this job, create a notes app or word document and start listing three things: your accomplishments in the current job, what you like about the job, and what you don’t like.
This will make your life so much easier when it’s time to start looking for a more ideal job. Your future self will thank you.
The Truth About Your 20s
This decade matters. A lot.
Not because you need to have everything figured out…
But because this is when you build:
- work ethic
- Skills
- Experience
- connections
The longer you stay stuck, the harder it becomes to build momentum.
If You’re Still Feeling Stuck
If you’re trying to figure out your next step, struggling with direction, or feeling overwhelmed by all your options…
You don’t have to figure it out alone.
This is something I work through with a lot of 20-somethings—helping them create clarity, structure, and momentum.
