Let’s address the elephant in the room.
A lot of people hear things like:
- Affirmations
- Journaling
- Visualization
- Mindset work
…and immediately think:
“Yeah… that’s a little too woo-woo for me.”
Same.
I used to feel that way too.
It felt kind of cringe. Kind of unnecessary. Like something that sounds nice but doesn’t actually do anything.
But here’s the reality:
That “woo-woo” stuff works.
Not in a magical, manifest-your-dream-life-overnight way…
…but in a very real, practical, your-brain-is-wired-this-way kind of way.
What People Mean When They Say “Woo-Woo”
Most of what people call “woo-woo” is just:
- becoming aware of your thoughts
- changing how you talk to yourself
- intentionally focusing your attention
- shifting your perspective
That’s it.
It’s not weird.
It’s just something most people have never been taught how to do.
The Problem: You’re Running on Autopilot
There’s a quote from Carl Jung that explains this perfectly:
“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”
Translation:
A lot of your life is being run by patterns you’re not even aware of.
Your thoughts.
Your habits.
Your reactions.
Your decisions.
You think:
“This is just how I am.”
But most of the time? It’s just conditioning.
What That Looks Like in Real Life
This shows up in ways like:
- constantly overthinking everything
- assuming the worst in situations
- procrastinating even when you want to do better
- feeling stuck but not knowing why
- repeating the same patterns in jobs or relationships
And because it feels automatic, you think:
“This is just my personality.”
It’s not. It’s just unexamined patterns running in the background.
What the “Woo-Woo” Stuff Actually Does
All of these tools: journaling, affirmations, reflection, etc. do one main thing:
They bring your unconscious patterns to the surface.
Instead of running on autopilot, you start noticing:
- what you’re thinking
- how you’re reacting
- what you’re avoiding
- what stories you’re telling yourself
And once you see it…You can change it.
Why It Works (Without the Fluff)
This isn’t about being “positive all the time.”
It’s about: awareness → choice → change
Without awareness, you don’t have a choice.
You just repeat the same patterns.
With awareness, you can pause and think:
“Wait… I don’t actually have to keep doing this.”
That’s where things start to shift.
A Simple Example
Let’s say your default thought is:
“I’m probably not qualified enough for that job.”
If you’re not aware of that thought, you just… don’t apply.
But if you catch it, you can challenge it:
“Is that actually true? Or am I just scared?”
That small shift can completely change your actions.
You Don’t Have to Go Full “Woo-Woo”
You don’t need:
- Crystals
- long morning rituals
- an hour of journaling
You just need to start paying attention.
Start small:
- write down your thoughts for 2 minutes
- notice patterns in how you react
- question the things you automatically believe
That’s it.
The Real Reason People Avoid This
It’s not because it’s “weird.”
It’s because it requires you to look at yourself honestly.
And that can be uncomfortable.
It’s easier to say:
“This is just how I am.”
Than to ask:
“Why do I keep doing this?”
The Shift That Changes Everything
If you take one thing from this:
You are not stuck.
You are just running patterns you haven’t questioned yet.
And once you start becoming aware of them…
You stop being controlled by them.
If You Feel Stuck in Your Patterns
If you feel like you keep repeating the same habits, thoughts, or decisions and don’t know how to change them…
You don’t have to figure it out alone.
This is something I work through with a lot of 20-somethings, helping them understand their patterns and actually change them.
